The month of May brings blooming flowers, sunshine, and a chance to recognize and celebrate the special women in our lives. Mother’s Day poses a special opportunity for community members to take pause to acknowledge the large number of single mothers dealing with food insecurity and hunger. Food insecure mothers face barriers such as unemployment and underemployment, child care expenses, and difficulty accessing basic household items. Often times these single women are working to fulfill the needs of themselves and their children, but have difficulty providing food, despite their tireless efforts.
In 2014 those with single parent households faced higher levels of food insecurity than those headed by two parents; 35% of those households had single mothers and children.
Last year, Manna served more than 100 single parents. Manna makes it their mission to serve food insecure individuals and families throughout the Conejo Valley. We cater to single mothers by offering diapers, feminine hygiene products, appropriate school lunch supplies, and healthy produce options. We do this so these hard working individuals can have a chance to focus on other important aspects of their lives, like being a loving and caring mom.
Don’t forget to thank those important women in your lives who have worked hard to provide for you. This mother’s day give back to our wonderful mothers by donating food to better their homes and hearts.
